This weekend I had the pleasure of going to Cairo (Egypt) for the Annual Congress of the African Triathlon Union, and it was really something extraordinary to be there with 21 African National Federations, all of them active members of our family, and having the chance of share with them their plans for the future and their view of how to keep on growing our sport.
As I said, it was really impressive to see the 21 NFs at the General Assembly, and I really want to thank Ahmed Nasser, President of the African Union, for the organization of the congress and for truly believing in the growth and development of our sport in Africa.
Another thing that made me really proud was the fact that the new Executive Board just elected will have four women out of 11 positions, among them the first and second vicepresidents and the treasurer. A 36% female presence on the Board, that’s really impressive!
Our sport has been promoting the presence of females on management positions since the beginning, and we are being taken as a role model in many other International Federations for our push in this field, so that’s something that makes us really proud of, especially in regions as Africa.
So I can only say thank you for your commitment with triathlon, and also for stepping forward and helping developing our sport. It’s going to be a fun and fruitful journey!

Las mujeres dan un paso adelante en África
Este fin de semana he tenido la oportunidad de viajar hasta El Cairo (Egipto) para asistir al Congreso Anual de la Federación Africana de Triatlón, y ha sido realmente extraordinario ver que han acudido 21 Federaciones Nacionales, todas ellas miembros activos de nuestra gran familia, y poder compartir con todos ellos los planes para el futuro de nuestro deporte y los diferentes proyectos para seguir desarrollando el triatlón en el continente.
Como acabo de mencionar, sólo el hecho de que hubiera presentes 21 Federaciones Nacionales en un continente en el que muchas de ellas han sido creadas recientemente es todo un reto, algo por lo que quiero agradecer especialmente a Ahmed Nasser, Presidente de la Federación Africana, por organizar este espléndido foro de reunión y debate, por estar siempre al servicio del triatlón y por permitirnos a todos trabajar para un futuro brillante de nuestro deporte.
Otra cosa que me ha hecho sentir sumamente orgullosa es que en la votación para elegir al nuevo Comité Ejecutivo de la ATU, cuatro mujeres han sido elegidas, de los 11 cargos que hay en la Junta: Las vicepresidentas primera y segunda, la tesorera y una vocal. Una presencia de un 36% de mujeres en la Junta es algo de lo que no muchos pueden presumir y nos hace sentirnos especialmente orgullosos de nuestras mujeres.
Nuestro deporte y nuestra Federación trabaja desde sus inicios por que las mujeres tengan una gran presencia en todos los órganos federativos, y precisamente por eso la ITU es puesta como un modelo a seguir por otras instituciones deportivas en todo el mundo. Y no podemos sentirnos más orgullosos, especialmente cuando tenemos una presencia femenina tan grande en regiones como África.
Así que sólo puedo daros las gracias a todos, por participar, por hacer nuestro deporte mejor y más grande y por venir con nosotros en este viaje que va a ser muy emocionante.
