Tiszy’s 20th anniversary-------------

For a whole week in July since 1996, a little town in Hungary, Tiszaujvaros, becomes the triathlon capital of the world, while they celebrate the Triathlon Week. I haven’t seen many places in the world where you can feel the atmosphere and the crowds cheering as they do in Tiszy, and that’s always a pleasure for all the triathlon family.

This year, I had the pleasure of joining the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the World Cup and attended the ETU Triathlon Junior European Cup and the ETU Triathlon Youth European Championship. Amazing races! And this weekend will be time for the grown-ups, with the World Cup taking place Saturday and Sunday.

It was also great to be with the 40 young athletes and coaches of the ETU Youth Camp, from Belarus, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Macedonia, Malta, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia, who where here the whole week learning, training and also participating in some of the races. The new generations of European athletes are coming strong.

In Tiszy I felt specially moved by this amazing wall they've built with the names of the 1250 people that has been involved working or as a volunteer here in the last 20 years. Made me so proud to see all the names in there, including mine!

While in Hungary, I also had the chance of meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orban, along with Pál Schmitt, the Hungarian Olympic Committee Honorary President and IOC Honorary Member; Bela Bátorfi, president of the Hungarian Triathlon Federation and Balazs Fürjes Government representant.

We had the chance of letting the Prime Minister know how our sport has evolved in the last few years in the country. Just as an example, in London 2012 Olympic Games there was only one Hungarian triathlete competing, while in Rio there will be four of them. Way to go!

--------------
