Before we kick off
the season in Abu Dhabi in a few weeks, is now time for some cold weather and
snow. We at ITU are
trading in our bathing suits for some skies this weekend, and I’m off to Zeltweg, in
Austria, to watch the 2016 ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships, where the
top winter triathletes from all over the world will
join together battling for the chance to be the best to race on foot, bike and
skies.
The
first ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships were held in Mals, Italy, in
1997, but the first time that the three segments where held on snow was in
2001. There have been 17 editions of the Winter Triathlon World Championships
in the first 25 years of ITU history, with Austria, Italy, Germany, Russia and
Norway dominating the podium, so let’s see how the will do this weekend.
For me
is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to watch first hand all types of
competitions, from the WTS to the local ones organized in countries with almost
no triathlon tradition, and from the races in summer to the winter ones, as it
really shows that our sport is growing day by day, with lots of different
athletes from different backgrounds are joining our family.
This
weekend is going to be quite busy for the sport lovers, as this Friday is also
the Opening Ceremony of the Lillehammer Youth Olympics. I really would have loved
to be present there on Friday, as is always a pleasure to support the younger
athletes on their road to become Olympics, but I’ll go next week, to enjoy the
ambience and the competitions for a few days.

Triatlón de invierno
Antes
de que arranque la temporada en unas semanas en Abu Dhabi, es tiempo ahora de
disfrutar un poco del frío y de la nieve. Así que en la ITU hemos cambiado los
trajes de neopreno y la playa por los esquís. Este fin de semana estaré en
Zeltweg, en Austria, viendo los Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatlón de Invierno,
la cita más importante del calendario de los triatletas de invierno, que
lucharán por conseguir una medalla compitiendo con la bici, a pie y con esquís.
El
primer Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón de Invierno se dispute en 1997 en Mals,
en Italia, pero no fue hasta el año 2001 cuando se dispute la prueba
íntegramente sobre nieve. Es una prueba que se ha asentado con firmeza en el
calendario, y ya llevamos 17 ediciones del Mundial, en el que Austria, Italia,
Alemania, Rusia y Noruega han conseguido el mayor número de medallas.
Para mí siempre es un placer tener la oportunidad de
ver en primera persona todo tipo de competiciones, desde las WTS hasta las
pruebas locales organizadas en países con casi ninguna tradición de triatlón, y
tanto las carreras de verano como las de invierno, es realmente impresionante
ver que nuestro deporte sigue creciendo día a día, con muchísimos atletas de
perfiles muy distintos que se suman a nuestra ya gran Familia.
Este
fin de semana, además, va a ser muy especial para los amantes del deporte,
porque además de nuestro Mundial, el viernes es la Ceremonia de Inauguración de
los Juegos de la Juventud de Invierno en Lillehamer (Noruega). Me habría
encantado poder estar allí para demostrar mi apoyo a las nuevas generaciones de
deportistas, los que sin duda veremos en unos años en los Juegos, pero como no
puedo ir a la Inauguración, iré a Lillehamer la semana que viene, a disfrutar
unos días de las competiciones y el ambiente festivo y deportivo de la ciudad.
