Aviles 2016 ITU World Champs

The announcement of a major event is always a great time for those who form the ITU Family. When that event is also in my country, my pleasure is even greater. That’s why it has been a real pleasure to go to Aviles, a small town in northern Spain, which will host the ITU Duathlon World Championships next June.

The city is prepared. They have already hosted the Spanish Championships this year, in preparation for the Duathlon Worlds next summer. The circuit will be again near the amazing Niemeyer Center, thus uniting sport and culture, which is one of the values we try to instil both from ITU and the IOC.

The Organizing Committee, which includes the Mayor, Mariví Monteserín, and President of the Spanish Federation, José Hidalgo, has already started working, and I'm sure it will be one of the most interesting events of the schedule next year. See you there to experience it first hand!

Anunciar un gran evento siempre es un gran momento para los que formamos la familia de la ITU, pero cuando además ese evento se hace en mi país, mi alegría es doble. Para mí ha sido todo un placer poder ir a Avilés, una pequeña ciudad en el norte de España, donde el próximo mes de junio se celebrará el Campeonato del Mundo de Duatlón.

La ciudad está más que preparada. Ya este año ha sido esta ciudad la que ha organizado el Campeonato de España, como preparación para el Mundial del año que viene. El circuito girará en torno al centro Niemeyer, uniendo así deporte y cultura, que es uno de los valores que tratamos de inculcar desde la ITU y el COI.

El Comité Organizador, del que forman parte la alcaldesa Mariví Monteserín, y el presidente de la Federación Española, José Hidalgo, ya ha comenzado a trabajar, y estoy segura de que nos ofrecerán una de las pruebas más interesantes del calendario del año que viene. Allí estaremos para verlo en primera persona.
