Lausanne, Switzerland’s Olympic capital, was this week
the centre of sports governance, with meetings taking place for all IOC
commissions and SportAccord, to which I had the opportunity to attend.
I had the opportunity to participate in the annual meeting of the IOC
Women in Sport Commission, to which I have belonged since more than a year ago.
As the only female International Federation President of a summer sport on
the Olympic programme, for me and ITU, it is a great opportunity to have a strong voice in these events, because it gives us the opportunity to showcase
that in our Federation, gender balance is more than just an idea, it is a
reality.
The triathlon family strongly believes in equal opportunities, so our
athletes receive the same prizes men than women, and our Table Officials has strong
female representation, just to name a few of our policies regarding gender
balance. In recent years, the number of female presidents of National
Federations has grown substantially. We still have work to do there, as we
also need to look at creating opportunities for women in sports leadership,
coaching and technical official capacities. There is still a severe lack of
representation from women in these areas, and we are fully committed with
helping them, in their countries, to achieve those roles. And we are also
promoting the Mixed Relay event, which we believe promotes gender equality. Our
firm objective, mine and that of ITU, is that we can include the Mixed Relay
event in the program of the Tokyo 2020 Games.
ITU is being considered as an example for the sports world for its
measures to boost the gender equality policies, and that is something that the
entire Triathlon Family must be very proud of. We still have a long way to go
and we will do it all together, but we're on the right track.
………………
buen camino.
