Triathlon in Cuba

One of the greatest prides of my work as President of the ITU is to see that our sport and the Triathlon Family is growing daily. That’s one of the reasons why it makes me especially proud to be able to attend the presentation of the second edition of the ITU Long Distance Series of Havana 2016. I’m sure it will be again an extraordinary event, both for the level of the athletes and also for the very especial prizes for the winners, which will be, once again, handmade works of renowned Cuban artists.

Cuba, whose Federation was established in 2004, in the last two years has made an exceptional effort to start organizing high level international events, opening their country to athletes, coaches and technical officials, receiving support and training from other countries and absorbing all that knowledge in the events they are organizing.

Gradually, the sport is growing in Cuba, and gradually the Federation is making efforts to extend their events and actions not only to elite triathletes, but to amateurs and age groups. We will continue working with our Cuban friends so that, in the not too distant future, they can organize a World Cup event, which is the dream of the Federation and are determined to make it happen. It is an honor for us how much they have progressed in such a short period of time, and the strength and energy they are putting into keep growing every year and involved in major international events.

Uno de los mayores orgullos de mi trabajo como Presidenta de la ITU es ver que nuestro deporte y la Familia del Triatlón crece día a día. Por eso me hace especial ilusión haber podido asistir a la presentación de la segunda edición de la ITU Long Distance Series of La Habana 2016.  Estoy totalmente segura de que será, de nuevo, un gran evento, tanto por el alto nivel de los triatletas como porque será una muestra de cómo la cultura cubana se implica con nuestro deporte, ya que los premios, una vez más, consistirán en obras únicas realizadas por reconocidos artistas cubanos.

Cuba, cuya Federación se estableció en el año 2004, en los dos últimos años ha hecho un trabajo excepcional para empezar a organizar eventos internacionales de gran nivel, abriéndose a atletas, entrenadores y técnicos, recibiendo la ayuda y formación de otros países y absorbiendo todos esos conocimientos para aplicarlos en las carreras.

Poco a poco, el deporte va creciendo en Cuba, y poco a poco la Federación se va abriendo extender su formación, sus eventos y sus acciones no sólo a los triatletas de élite, sino a atletas amateurs y grupos de edad. Seguiremos trabajando junto a nuestros amigos cubanos para que, en un futuro no demasiado lejano, puedan organizar alguna prueba de la Copa del Mundo, que es el sueño al que aspira la Federación y están decididos a convertirlo en realidad. Es para nosotros un orgullo lo mucho que han avanzado en un periodo de tiempo tan corto, y la fuerza y la energía que están poniendo en seguir creciendo año a año e involucrarse cada día más en los grandes eventos internacionales.
