In Cozumel (Mexico) we have experienced a
whole week of Triathlon at its very best, the best sample of what our sport is
all about and what our athletes are capable of. We have seen incredible races,
which will never be forgotten.
Cozumel will be, forever, the place where
we saw first hand how big it is our sport, and how sometimes sportsmanship and
camaraderie are above everything, including victories.
I want to give my sincere congratulations
to our new world champions, Flora Duffy and Mario Mola, for showing during the
whole season your consistency and your dedication for our sport. It is a pride
that you bear our sport so far, as also did Henri Schoeman winning the race here
in Cozumel and proving that it was no coincidence his bronze medal at the Games
in Rio.
Or as did also Gwen Jorgensen (second in Cozumel and the World Series
), Charlotte McShane (bronze in Cozumel) and Ai Ueda (third in the World Series).
And thanks to Alistair and Jonny Brownlee for delivering such an incredible
performance in Cozumel.
I also want to congratulate the Spanish
team that won in the Mixed Relay U23 and Junior race, followed by young Britons
and Australians. I feel so proud to see
how this spectacular format consolidates daily, with the Mixed Relays showing
in every race some of the most beautiful images of our sport. We will continue
to work hard to see the Mixed Relays included in the Olympic program.
I can not help but to also thank all
members of ITU and the Mexican Triathlon Federation for delivering this great
week of races. And, of course, to all the athletes who participated these days
in the Grand Final of Cozumel, from elite to age groupers, for helping us
making our sport so great and delivering such a great and sporty performance.
This WTS season comes to an end but we are
already working on the next one, which will start in Abu Dhabi on March 3 and will
finish at Rotterdam on 14 September. Ahead, many months of hard work to
continue making triathlon a reference around the world.
